Cheonggye Temple

Located at 11 Cheonggye-dong, Uiwang City, this temple is Gyeonggi-do's Cultural Asset No. 6 and stands on the mid-slope of Cheonggye Mountain. Founded during the Shinra era and refurbished in 1284, the Cheonggye Temple and its layout are designed after the architectural styles of Chosun era. To calm the anger of Buddhists against the removal of a temple from the capital city, this area was selected for the head temple of Zen Buddhism. Located a mere 10km to the east of Anyang, today's Cheonggye Temple has been shaped by the increase in the number of affectionate and succeeding resident priests since 1955. Erected in 1689, Sajeokgibi(174cmX92cmX26cm) stands within the temple grounds near the Geukrakbojeon, a building of post Chosun origins. At the center of Geukrakbojeon sits an enshrined seated Amitabha Buddha statue with the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy statue on the left and the Daeseji Buddist saint statue on the right. There are also some other towers and a temple dormitory.
