Appellation: Sung-Se (聖世),Pen name:Il-Seok (一石).
His birthplace is Yangjipyeon village, Yangjipyeonro 13-31, Uiwang City.
He was implicated in the incident of the Academy of Joseon Language in 1942 and imprisoned by Japan.

He was a linguist who served as a professor and dean at Seoul University and Sungkyunkwan University, and complied an unabridged Korean dictionary in 1981.
His writings include "Kukmunhakjeonghwa" and "Kukmunhakyeongucho, “ the poetry books "Gourd Flower" and "Fragment of Heart," and the popular essay collections "Sufferance in Silence" and "Sleep Taking of a Blind Man."
